I ordered a Gobble Gobble at Fork In The Road Street Food in Grimsby - and it lived up to its name

A new street food stall has opened on Freeman Street Market in Grimsby – and I have a feeling it's going to be very popular.

Fork In The Road Street Food has been launched by former restaurant worker Toby Jack, who decided to start the business in his hometown of Grimsby after he was inspired by the cuisines he tried while travelling around south east Asia, Australia and Mexico.

Heading down there on a quiet Wednesday morning, I was absolutely spoilt for choice when I looked at the menu, which has been created with a special Christmas theme. It is set to be updated after the festive season.

It took me a while to actually decide what to order, because everything on the menu just sounded so scrummy. I asked for Toby's recommendations and he advised I go for the "OG" Gobble Gobble, which is essentially pulled turkey leg in homemade gravy, topped with slaw, pickled red onions, a sage and onion stuffing aioli and cranberry ketchup in a brioche bun, served alongside triple-cooked rosemary fries.

For a side order, I was torn between the Merry Mac & Cheesemus – creamy nutmeg mac & cheese topped with a roasted chestnut crumb and crispy fried Brussels sprouts – or the deep-fried sprouts served on their own, which are tossed in a cranberry balsamic sauce. Being an avid Brussels sprouts fan, I was keen to find out what a deep-fried sprout actually tastes like, so obviously I went for this one.

Altogether, the price of the food came to £9.50. I thought this was pretty reasonable considering how much food I was actually given and how filling it was – and I think I would've paid a lot more had it been in a big city like Manchester or Leeds. If you're a lover of no-nonsense, messy, treat-yourself food that you're bound to ruin a white top with whilst demolishing, Fork In The Road is somewhere you absolutely need to try.

The Gobble Gobble was absolutely delicious and the pulled turkey just melted in my mouth. Combined with the crispiness of the slaw and the tangy, sweet and festive flavour of the cranberry ketchup, it was just something else. I'd say it definitely comes within the top five burgers I've eaten in my lifetime – and trust me, there's been a lot.

The triple-cooked rosemary fries were amazing, too. There's nothing I hate more than oven chips, so for me, you just can't beat chips made completely fresh. My only criticism would be that they were a bit too salty for my liking – but it didn't stop me from polishing off the lot.

On to the crispy fried Brussels sprouts. These were honestly unlike anything I've ever tasted before in my life. If I had to compare it to anything, I'd say it'd be closest to crispy fried seaweed from the Chinese. They were salty as hell and probably one of the worst things you can eat if you're on a diet, but they were delicious and very moreish.

My verdict:

I'm so glad Fork In The Road has opened in Grimsby, and I wish Toby the very best of luck. He's been so creative with the dishes he's come up with and his fusions of different cuisines and ingredients – and I love the fact the menu is going to be ever-changing, with new dishes to look forward to every few weeks.

Get yourself down to Freeman Street Market before Christmas to try the goods on the special festive themed menu at Fork In The Road – you'll thank me for it later. You can learn more on Fork In The Road's Facebook page.
